“Jesus, the Healer”
(Reading of Mark 1:29 – 39 NIV)
29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered at the door, 34and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. 35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"
38Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." 39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Everybody believes that Jesus heals. When I went to the province, I saw one big banner hang around in all the street corners of the national highway saying: JESUS MIRACLE CRUSADE, COME TO BE HEALED. I don’t know what is going on there, anyhow, that is very true that Jesus is the healer. Why Jesus can heal your wounds, do you know? How the doctor gives you a kind of idea on how you can treat your disease if you have common cold or coughing. You visit and call the doctor then the doctor says, “Okay, this is your problem; buy this medicine and take it.” How does the doctor know? I heard that there is no any perfect solution for even a common cold. We complain about our coughing so we are given medicine to reduce or stop coughing. Then you will say, “Doctor, I have headache at the same time.” The doctor says, “This is the medicine for headache again.” Then, “Doctor, I have fever at the same time.” “Oh really, this is the medicine for fever again,” says the doctor. What if you a thousand kinds of problem; the doctor will give you a thousand kinds of medicine as well? One dosage is like one kilogram of medicine that you have to take.
I’m telling you how Jesus can heal our problem, why and how? Jesus, himself, is the wounded healer. He is wounded because of our sins. This is what I would like to say today: how and why Jesus approached people in that way? I know that I told you before what were the ministries of Jesus Christ? Based on Matthew, I shared with you three things – teaching, preaching and healing. When you see Matthew Chapter 1, you may see the first time that Jesus called His disciples. I’m talking about calling for a very long, long time because Jesus is calling His disciples, the people of God every day but the problem is no one is willing to respond. Even the Holy Spirit speaks to us every day and every circumstance but few would respond. How many churches do we have; how many members we have in the world? But very few are responding. Even today, in every church in the world, there is the Word of God to be preached but very few are responding. Just like everybody knows that this is a good medicine but nobody takes. They only know that this is very good medicine. This is good for common cold. This medicine is good for flu. Even he or she is suffering from that sickness; he or she doesn’t like to take it. So the ministry of Jesus Christ is, first, he called His people.
When you see Book of Mark, when Jesus called His disciples from the people – you know Peter and Andrew were actually fishermen – immediately they responded to the calling of Jesus Christ. That is the first ministry of Jesus Christ. If so, our ministry in SFCF must be the same. Throughout our ministry, we have to call the people, disciples of Jesus Christ, not disciples of Pastor Bang.
Next is Jesus taught His disciples person to person. Jesus had only few disciples in number. Then Jesus taught and showed them how to live. That is how Jesus made His teaching to His disciples so if the teaching is one of the ministry of Jesus Christ, the teaching must be the same activity or something we have to focus in our church as well. So, teach person to person; teach what – what is the kingdom of God, what is the will f God, how to live, what is the meaning of cross, what is the salvation? I’m sorry; we don’t teach how to be very good in politics or political field.
Then Jesus preached when they have many people gathered together; Jesus preached the kingdom of God. If that is one of the ministry of Jesus Christ, we SFCF, must do the same – preaching to the people – whether we have chance or not, we preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The last but not the least of course is healing a person. I don’t like to say to only the personal healing. I believe that God want to heal us not only our physical body but also our inside and outside, even inner man; he want to heal. We found many cases in Korea that somebody’s behavior is really extreme. Nobody could expect or understand why he did so because he or she has been destroyed by certain forces during his life. The majority of power which destroyed someone’s life does not come from natural forces but from power or forces from human behavior and human being which means that there is no animal that does the same in killing and destroying than man does. What Jesus did is driving out evil spirit; Jesus cast out all the demons. That is how Jesus did in His ministry.
I would like to see verse 29-34: Jesus heals a woman – the mother-in-law of Simon – with fever. When you see the verses 40-45, even Jesus healed leprosy. I would like to say about only three things and what these things give us, what kind of insight, to serve the Lord. Jesus heals all sorts of sickness, all kinds of disease. If so, Jesus wants, Jesus can, Jesus heals my disease as well. We need to approach that in faith. Jesus healed a fever, leprosy, and even cast the demon; if you are suffering from any disease, you come to the Lord. I don’t like my voice high; we don’t need to make my voice high, you have to go to the Lord because power comes from the Word of God. If you are sick with any disease, do not misunderstand or misinterpret that any disease means your physical disease only. But people have the tendency that if somebody is talking about sickness, sickness means the sickness of the body. Most of the cases, sickness comes from the illness of the inner man. If I have so many problems in my ministry, I feel something butterfly in my stomach. I have no butterfly in my stomach but I felt like that because kind of situation.
Jesus heals all sorts of disease. Even in any circumstance, Jesus heals in the synagogues; Jesus heals His people in a home; Jesus heals His people even in the marketplace regardless of environment, regardless of place and time because He is working beyond time and space.
Even Jesus heals all sorts of people. It’s very funny when I read the Bible in Mark, Mark somehow emphasized on women; he somehow put the women’s position higher than man. I don’t know the real intention of Mark but it’s no problem, I just found that way because in the book of Mark, where you have the woman has anointed Jesus Christ and that time, the disciples rebuked her; even Mark stated about the women on the cross, it is only the women who went up to where Jesus is crucified. What about the first day of resurrection in the grave? The women saw it. Anyhow, my point is that the women in that time has no any place to put their name, no social power, their profile is so low. What about the widow who is a very small woman who has no any husband offered two coins?
Dear brothers and sisters, this is the point today that serving the Lord is not based on how much you have, how much time you have, how much of capacity you have, how much of intellectual power you have, how much of your social background you have. Well, you may have it, you may serve the Lord with that one but even though you don’t have such great things so-called fancy things or luxury things in the secular life, you still can serve the Lord. Jesus wants to approach and penetrate into all people, not only Americans, not only for the people in States, not only for the Korean, but also I do believe that God is in the ends of the earth where there is something very few and very weak people who live in the corner of the province in Mindanao. I do trust God is working everywhere so dear brothers and sisters, let see how Jesus is working for men and women and all sorts of people and all sorts of status.
Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from fever then they asked Jesus, “My mother-in-law was sick. I want Jesus Christ to come to my house. Come to my house where there is people lying down because of the sickness.” Once he come to my house or come to your house, if Jesus would come to your house, when? When you have real desire: “Lord, come to my house, I’ll open my house because my house is messy, my house is full of sin so far…” Why you close your house; why you lock up your house, do you know? Because you don’t like to show your dark part, dark side of your life to Jesus Christ. Once we open our house, once Jesus get inside of my house and your house, Jesus will do for your life. But no one in these days opens their lives to Jesus Christ. So I challenge you dear brothers and sisters, open your house: “Jesus, I have sins in my house, in my life. Jesus, I am suffering from fever.” Once he gets into your house, then if you would tell Jesus that you have fever, “Jesus I have fever – fever because of my problems, fever because of my past…” Tell everything to Jesus: “I’m sick. I’m guilty. I’m impossible. I want You to do something for me…” And then just tell Jesus, “I am now going angry because of the situation. Not only angry, I am committing sin every day, more and more…” Open your house and tell Jesus, “All the situation that I have in my house as you see, I am so much feverish, so much nervous, so Father, come to my house, my life.” If you tell Him, Jesus would do something you never expect, such great things.
Verse 31 says: Jesus went to that woman who is lying down on the floor. When you tell Jesus, Jesus comes to you. Jesus never says anything from the distance. Jesus just comes to you. When we open our arms and when we lift our hands to the Lord, “Lord, I am sick. I have a fever of sins in my life so I am unable to move according to Your will…” But you don’t do, you don’t open because you are so shameful. But Jesus Christ even took the most shameful ministry in life which is dying on the cross. Just compare the shame and let’s trade off.
Then Jesus went to her and He took her hands. According to the Bible, there’s no any good that that woman did. The Bible never mentioned about her but Jesus came to her and took her hand: “Precious Lord, take my hand. I am lying down because of the fever in life…” Jesus not only took her hands but when you see verse 31, Jesus helped her up… This is something we can see in even Acts 3:9, when John and Peter went to the synagogue/temple to pray then they met one man who could not stand up for his lifelong. He asked something to Peter and John and Peter said, “I don’t have silver and gold but I would like to give to you what I have which is in the name of Jesus…” Then they gave their hands, took his hands and then make him stand. Jesus always helps you when you open. The problem is you never open your heart when you have fever. Even though you are suffering from fever so long time, you could not pray? You have fever. You don’t like to come to the church? You have fever. You don’t love your wife anymore? You have fever. You don’t like your parents? You have fever. You don’t like the Word of God to hear? You have fever. You are committing sins every night? You have fever. You love somebody’s wife? You have fever. You make a very dirty relationship with somebody’s husband? You have fever. That is fever! Open up! You cannot solve. If you can solve, God never gave us Jesus Christ because we don’t have any clue and solution so God, Himself, died on the cross. So Jesus helped our life up.
Brothers and sisters, what happened (to the woman)? The fever flees immediately. Because that fever flee and left at once. When God is working, you will see the result at once. That is what God wants to. The problem is we never give our hands to the Lord. We never open up our hearts to the Lord.
There’s another point I would like to share to you: She began to wait on them… The problem has been solved immediately; no more fever, she could move, she could do anything just like a normal person. So immediately, she has been involved in serving. You know, we pray in many cases: “Father, do this. Father, do that, so that I can do what I like to do.” Let’s change our motivation: “Father, I am lying down so I cannot serve you. Father I don’t have a job so I cannot serve you. Lord, just make me like this man, that kind of people. Please make my business that way so that I can serve you. Father, I have the eagerness and desire; how possibly I can serve you throughout my life. But Lord, this is only my desire not my situation. You see I am lying down. Come to my house. Come to my life and hold my hands. Lift me high Lord so I can stand, so I can serve you.” What is the real motivation of your prayer? You know that. Before you know, God knows.
One woman lying down because of sickness then Jesus healed immediately and (the woman) being involved to serve the Lord. What about others, the disciples who were never sick? Healthy person stayed beside of Jesus Christ. The mother-in-law started to serve, what about the son-in-law, Peter Simon? He did nothing here. Because he was named the disciple of Jesus; because he was named as Apostle; because of he was named as a Pastor and missionary; so he was standing by Jesus Christ while the mother-in-law of Simon is serving in that house? What about the female? (I want to preach this one in Korean, actually.) All the females – female doesn’t mean only the sexual gender but let’s say the physically weak – that time has no any sources of living, weak, poor. Who serve the Lord? Who responded the right responding, the women or the disciples? Who has insensitivity, or who has no any sensitivity – “What is going on here?” You just say, “I’m going with Jesus, I am a disciple; I am a Pastor; I am a church leader…” Then they never see what she is doing under the table – with tear and wet eyes, she served the Lord, get all kinds of perfume she could prepare for Jesus, while the other people, the strong men, somebody who has everything enjoy in their lives.
Jesus heals your fever. Open up. Invite Him. “Come to my very inner room Lord. Come, because I cannot organize it. It has been tangled for so long time.” Come to the Lord; open up your heart. Just come to the Lord. You have to ready to serve Him. “Solve my problem, Lord. So with pure heart, with purity in my life Lord, I want to serve you.” All these things could be your prayer for today. May God bless you…
